Higher Rock: First, I would like to thank you for taking the time to speak with me, it truly is a blessing. When did you first accept Christ into your life?
Lauren: I grew up in a Christian home. I was baptized when I was 7 years old, but when I was 15 years old, I came to know Jesus deeper than I ever had.
Higher Rock: When did you realize singing/music was your calling/purpose in life?
Lauren: When I was the ages of 15-17 years old, I was diagnosed with an illness that caused me to be placed on homebound and removed from school. It was in that time that God began speaking to my spirit through daydreams and visions about tour buses, songs, stages, and singing. After several years of pursuing the understanding of His will, I realized that music was in His plan for my life.
Higher Rock: You write songs as well, which to me is an amazing gift. How do you go about the writing process....life experiences, write songs on the road, etc.?
Lauren: The writing process is ever-changing for me. When I first moved to Nashville, I was co-writing everyday with various strangers. Through that time, I found a handful of writers that I really click with in my creative approach. Songwriting is like a marriage- there is a lot of give and take- but when I find those that speak a similar heart language while presenting enough of a challenge to ensure fresh perspective above creative monotony, I believe the best work comes forth. Other times, I am driving down the road and something comes to mind so I sing it into my phone. It's all about keeping the clutter out of your creative space so that at any point, you are able to receive.
Higher Rock: The release of "How Can It Be" has brought in so many awards for you in the song/vocals. Did you ever imagine or see what this big picture was gonna turn out to be when recording it?
Lauren: When I was handed "How Can It Be", my heart broke in all the right ways. I didn't write this song. My producer had me listen to it one night after a meeting with the label about what songs made the cut for the record. I knew it was the song that was missing from what we had, and it was the song my heart longed to sing because of how deeply I needed those lyrics. With the lump in my throats and tears in my eyes, I sang down the track in that very moment upon hearing the song. I wasn't thinking about awards or accolades. I was thinking about every other person that might need that song as much as I did. I could feel in that moment that something powerful was coming. It was undeniable simply because God breathed... and the rest is history. I'm honored to have been a part of whatever He saw fit for this song.
Higher Rock: It seems a lot of your songs kind of have a "Trust" them to them, was there a reason for that?
Lauren: I was walking through a season of learning how to trust God even through heartbreak. My grandfather passed from cancer, and I began my quest for believing God at His word despite how my circumstances might seem. During this time, I had to learn that His hand is always present and that His love for me is more vast than I could comprehend. He never fails us.
Higher Rock: What would you like listeners to receive from listening to your music?
Lauren: Jesus. ...& art.
Higher Rock: You have a Christmas release titled "Behold" being released on 10/21 and pre-orders for the CD will begin 9/26. Was this something you had always wanted to do is release a Christmas CD?
Lauren: Not exactly. I was opposed to the idea at first. I didn't want to be the next cheesy Christmas plastic on the shelf. There is nothing wrong with that; it's just that it was not authentic to my heart. I wanted to make sure that every artistic expression of mine would always be genuine. So when I began to dig a little deeper with my producer, label, and management, I felt like the only way I could do Christmas was that if it was a direct reflection of my upbringing. So we went New Orleans JAZZ!!! The project that I was the most reluctant about has become something I am the most excited about! God has a way of bringing us to places of reluctance to show us how to obtain true freedom. I'm so pumped!
Higher Rock: You will be embarking on your first headline tour around 10/12 and it's called, "A Night w/Lauren Daigle". How did you come about with the name for this tour?
Lauren: I didn't want to beat around the bush. It's simply a night together with every person in the audience and God. Nothing more and nothing less.
Higher Rock: When you have spare time, what do you like to do?
Lauren: Eat. Sleep. And be merry. With friends and family. And make sure to find an adventure in each moment.
Higher Rock: What can we expect to see from Lauren Daigle in the days, weeks, months and years to come?
Lauren: I'm currently on the "A Night With Lauren Daigle" tour. For Christmas, I will be out touring with For King & Country and bringing a little piece of jazz to each crowd we see. Then I'm taking a little break for some good rest. Starting next year, I will be writing for the next record. If all goes as planned, 2017 will hold the release of a new album.
